Tyson Nganou’s story is one of determination and inspiration that we can all learn from.
Nganou will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame after rising from humble beginnings in Cameroon to become the world UFC heavyweight champion.
He recently announced that he was terminating his UFC contract due to disagreements over certain clauses. While many will look at him as insane to turn down a contract that would have made him the highest paid heavyweight fighter in UFC history, he made it clear that he will stand by his principles saying, “It has to be on my terms”. Now an independent contractor, Nganou has advised other athletes to look at prioritising themselves and said, “I have to look up to myself and do what is right for me”. Nganou has stated that he has no ill will towards Dana White, and that a return to the UFC is always a possibility.
What does this mean for the UFC heavyweight division now that its heavyweight champion has departed?
The UFC have already organised a fight between Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane whom Nganou beat in january 2022. Jones vs Gane is set to take place in March 2023.
Nganou’s incredible punch power will definitely be missed by many, but the most refreshing fight for many was his win against Ciryl Gane where he completely transformed his game from his trademark power punches, to wrestling. Prior to his fight with Gane, Nganou made a wise decision to train with fellow African UFC fighter Kamaru Usman in order to better his wrestling skills, and that clearly paid off.
Many were hoping to see Nganou come up against Jon Jones whose only loss in the UFC has been from disqualification, he remains undefeated by other fighters. Luckily for fans of the UFC, they can still dream of this fight – Nganou has indicated there is always a chance of a return to the UFC one day.
What’s next for Francis Nganou?
A fight between the Cameroonian power puncher and Tyson Fury, the two-time world heavyweight boxing champion.
