Empowering African Women with Technology for Gender Equality

In the modern world, digital innovation and technological advancement have transformed almost every aspect of our lives, including the way we work, communicate, and access information. However, despite the potential benefits of these advancements, women across the world have not fully benefited from the digital revolution. The question remains, how can we empower African women with technology for gender equality?

In many cases, women are left behind in terms of access, skills, and opportunities. According to the International Telecommunication Union, women in Africa are 26% less likely than men to have access to the internet. This gap limits women’s ability to participate in the digital economy and access educational and economic opportunities. 

The good news is that digital innovation and technology can also serve as powerful tools for advancing gender equality, and there are many examples of African women who are leading the way in this space.

Unfortunately, many African women lack access to formal education, and even those who have received education often face significant barriers to accessing vocational training and skills development. 

Thankfully, online learning platforms and digital tools can help overcome these barriers by providing women access to courses and training programs that they may not have had access to otherwise. Kenyan non-profit, AkiraChix, is one such organization that provides coding and programming training to young women, enabling them to pursue careers in technology and digital innovation.

The rise of the digital economy has created new jobs and opportunities for women in fields such as e-commerce, digital marketing, and app development. So, another way that digital innovation and technology can empower women is by creating new economic opportunities.

In Nigeria, Funke Opeke founded MainOne, a telecommunications company that provides high-speed internet services to businesses and individuals. Opeke’s company has helped create new economic opportunities for women and enabled them to participate in the digital economy.

In addition to creating economic opportunities, digital innovation and technology can also help promote gender equality by challenging gender stereotypes and biases. 

Women in Africa have traditionally been excluded from certain industries, such as technology and engineering. However, digital innovation and technology have opened up new possibilities for women in these fields, allowing them to challenge stereotypes and assumptions about what women can and cannot do. 

South Africa’s Naledi Pandor serves as the Minister of Science and Technology, breaking down barriers and paving the way for other women to enter STEM fields.

Finally, digital innovation and technology can also be used to promote gender equality in other areas, such as health and social services. Mobile health apps are providing women with access to vital health information and services, while social media platforms can be used to raise awareness about gender-based violence and other issues affecting women.
